Public Have Say on How Private Hire are Licensed

Tewkesbury people have been invited to have their say on the way taxi and private hire drivers in the Borough are licensed.

Drivers in Tewkesbury Borough already deliver a safe and reliable service, said the council, and it wants to ensure this continues.

The council is consulting on two draft policies. The first looks at ways to deal with applicants that have previous criminal convictions, and the second discusses when it is deemed appropriate to suspend, revoke, or refuse to renew licenses.

The council already has a policy on how to deal with applications from people with criminal convictions but the aim is to make it clearer, more consistent and more robust.

The policy on what circumstances are necessary to suspend, revoke, or refuse to renew licenses will be a new policy that will give residents even more confidence that only suitable drivers are licensed.

Tewkesbury Borough Council’s chairman of licensing, Coun Bill Whelan, said: “We want to make sure that the taxi and private hire services in Tewkesbury Borough are safe and reliable.

“These two policies will allow a robust system to be put in place, ensuring public protection continues.

“We would really like to hear from members of the public on this matter. Their opinions are important and will help shape the final documents.”
